About GamblingCalifornia.com
GamblingCalifornia.com exists to help California gamblers find a place to play the way they want to. We do the research so you do not have to. Whether you are looking for the closest tribal casino, the best online operator that accepts California players, the latest on sports betting legislation, or just a quick reference for how old you have to be to bet on horses at Santa Anita, we have a page for it. The whole point of this site is to be the resource we wished existed when we started gambling in California ourselves.
Every member of our team either lives in California or grew up here, and all five of us are active gamblers across multiple categories. We are not a content farm pumping out generic articles based on press releases. We are people who play the games, visit the casinos, and bet the lines we write about. That is the difference we try to bring to every page on this site.
Our Team
Kevin W. – Owner and CEO
Kevin runs the site and lives in Lake Tahoe, where he has easy access to the Nevada side casinos and frequents them on a weekly basis. He is an avid gambler across pretty much every category we cover, with sports betting being his primary focus during NFL season. Kevin also plays daily fantasy sports across multiple operators and follows the legal landscape around DFS in California closely. His all-around gambling experience and California connections shape the editorial direction of the site.
Steve R. – Writer
Steve is one of our primary writers and is a regular poker player at the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe, where he plays cash games and tournaments throughout the year. He also spends a lot of time on the slot floors at California tribal casinos and on Las Vegas trips, which informs our slots and casino coverage. Steve hit a $10,000 score on a California Lottery Scratcher in 2025, which gave him a personal reason to pay close attention to lottery odds and prize structures.
Jonathan H. – Writer and Editor
Jonathan grew up in Arcadia, just a few minutes from Santa Anita Park, and worked at the track when he was 21. That experience makes him our resident horse racing expert, with a working knowledge of the California racing industry that goes back decades. He also plays table games in Las Vegas regularly, particularly blackjack and baccarat. Jonathan handles editing duties across the site in addition to writing, which means most of the pages here have benefited from his California-specific knowledge and his attention to detail.
David S. – Writer and Gambling Expert
David lives in Lake Tahoe and brings over 25 years of gambling experience to the team. He plays the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas every summer and has been a serious craps player for most of his adult life. David hit a $500,000 progressive jackpot in Las Vegas at one point, which is the kind of moment most gamblers spend their whole lives chasing. His depth of experience across casino games gives him a perspective that informs our coverage of land-based and online casinos alike.
Mike V. – Designer
Mike handles the design side of the site. He graduated from UCLA and now lives in San Francisco. Mike is a sports betting expert and a serious daily fantasy player, and he competes in the Circa Sports Survivor contest in Las Vegas every year. The Circa Survivor is one of the largest and most competitive NFL survivor pools in the world, so making it deep takes real skill. Mike’s design work and his sports betting expertise both shape how our sportsbook and DFS coverage gets presented.
Our Editorial Standards
We want this site to be the most accurate and honest resource for California gamblers, which means we hold ourselves to a few standards that not every gambling site bothers with.
We research thoroughly. Every page on this site is written based on actual research using current, primary sources. When we cite a law, we link to the official statute or government page. When we describe a casino’s offerings, we draw on direct experience or verified information from the casino itself. When the legal landscape changes (like the AB 831 sweepstakes ban or the 2026 cardroom regulations), we update our coverage to reflect what is actually happening, not what was true a year ago.
We update for accuracy. California gambling is a moving target. The cardroom rules changed in 2026. Sweepstakes casinos got banned. Northern California horse racing went dark. The DFS legal status shifted with the Bonta opinion. Pages on this site need to keep up, and we revisit our coverage when the law or the industry changes.
We disclose what is regulated and what is not. California has a complicated mix of state-licensed gambling, tribal gaming, federally regulated horse betting, and offshore options that operate in a gray area. We tell you which is which on every page where it matters. Offshore sites are clearly identified as offshore. Licensed operators are identified as licensed. Whatever your preference, you can make an informed choice.
We take responsible gambling seriously. Every page on this site ends with a note about problem gambling resources. That is not legal boilerplate. It is because we have seen what happens when gambling goes from entertainment to compulsion, and we want our readers to have help available if they ever need it. We do not push people toward sites or activities they have indicated they want to avoid, and we do not promote gambling as a path to wealth.
We are honest about what we recommend. When we recommend a sportsbook or casino, it is because we have actually used it or vetted it through people we trust. When we do not recommend something (like prediction markets, given the legal uncertainty), we say so plainly. We earn money through some of our recommendations, but the recommendations themselves are based on quality, not commission.
